 Mckinney-Vento......What is it?

 LCCS district Mckinney-Vento Liaison:

Administrative Assistant

Les Cheneaux Community Schools

Phone: 906-484-2256 (ext. 1101)

Fax: 906-484-2072

If you are experiencing a transitional housing situation, please be sure to inform the McKinney-Vento liaison to ensure that appropriate programs and services are put into place for you or your children.  If you have siblings or children not enrolled with  Les Cheneaux Community Schools, they may also qualify for programs and/or services.  We are unable to provide assistance if we are not aware of your situation and/or your concerns.

The McKinney-Vento law was written to protect the educational rights of children experiencing a transition in their housing situation (including foreclosure events). A child may qualify if he/she is living in any of the following situations:

· In a shelter or a transitional housing program

· In a motel or campground due to lack of an alternate adequate accommodation

· In a car, park, abandoned building, or bus or train station

· Doubled up with other people due to loss of housing or economic hardship

· Recently placed in a foster home (within the past six months)

· Has run away or otherwise is not accompanied by a legal parent or guardian

Eligible Students have the right to:

· Receive a free, appropriate public education

· Enroll in school immediately, even if lacking documents normally required for enrollment

· Enroll in school and attend classes while the school gathers needed documents

· Enroll in the local school or continue attending their school of origin (the school they attended when permanently housed or the school in which they were last enrolled), if that is their preference and is feasible. * If the school district believes that the school selected is not in the student’s best interest, then the district must provide the student with a written explanation of its position and inform the student of his/her right to appeal its decision.

· Receive transportation to and from the school of origin, if requested.

· Receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students, according to the students’ needs.
